A voluntary recall for desk and table lamps that present an electrocution risk sold by Cranbourne retailer Panda Mart has commenced.
Anyone who bought a Panda Mart table lamp before Energy Safe Victoria seized the remaining stock on 12 March 2025 should stop using it immediately, unplug it and return it to the retailer for a full refund.
Energy Safe compliance officers seized 902 of the table lamps after discovering safety hazards, including exposed wires and live parts, which if touched could have caused an electrocution.
It is believed hundreds of lamps may have been sold since Panda Mart opened on 27 February 2025.
“At this point we have had no reports of any incidents connected to these lamps, but the risk remains,” Energy Safe CEO Leanne Hughson said.
“If you have one, don’t use it. Unplug it immediately and return it to Panda Mart for a full refund. These lamps have exposed live parts, poorly insulated wires and protective covers that easily fall off. In some of them, if you were to put your hand in the wrong place, you would get an electric shock.”
Energy Safe discovered the lamps following routine inspections by compliance officers of electrical equipment suppliers.
“These products should never have made it to the shelves in the first place,” Ms Hughson said.
“Victorians should never buy electrical equipment unless it displays the regulatory compliance mark (RCM). This mark shows that the equipment meets safety standards.”
Energy Safe also found other unsafe Panda Mart products including desks with electric socket outlets where the installation brought the user into contact with live parts.
The ACCC is facilitating the voluntary recall.
