Energy Safe has charged lift companies Nordic Elevators Pty Ltd and Nordic Elevators Services Pty Ltd, and their directors under the Electricity Safety Act 1998 for offences relating to the death of a fourth year apprentice electrician working unsupervised on a car lift.

It is alleged the 21-year-old apprentice died in March 2021, after coming in contact with an energised piece of electrical equipment in a West Melbourne apartment block.

The alleged offences include charges relating to failing to effectively supervise the apprentice electrician and working on energised electrical equipment.

The matters are listed for mention at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 16 November 2023.

Gasfitter fined holiday park dryer installation

A licensed gasfitter and plumber has been fined $1500 in the Dromana Magistrate’s Court for failing to meet safety standards when installing a dryer in the communal laundry of a holiday park.

John Coburn pleaded guilty to six offences under the Gas Safety Act 1997 for the complex gas installation of a Maytag gas dryer at the Peninsula Holiday Park in Dromana in December 2020.

Mr Coburn did not obtain the required approval from Energy Safe Victoria for the installation and did not comply with prescribed safety standards.  He replaced the gas dryer connecting it to already existing non- compliant fittings and equipment which should have been upgraded to meet safety standards.

Magistrate Bryant imposed a fine of $1500 without conviction.
