Melton house fire linked to modified e-bike battery sparks fresh safety warning

A devastating house fire sparked by an e-bike battery with suspected modifications has prompted a renewed public safety warning about the serious fire risks of tampering with e-transport devices.

On 2 September 2025, a fire broke out in a Melton West home after a lithium-ion battery – believed to have been altered to increase performance – exploded while charging in a bedroom around 1pm.

A mother and her child inside at the time heard the explosions and escaped unharmed as the blaze quickly spread to the rest of the home. The property will be demolished due to the extensive damage.

Fire Rescue Victoria responded to the incident and after extinguishing the fire, investigators determined an e-bike battery on charge in the bedroom caused the fire. While the flames destroyed the battery and charger, inspections revealed an un-damaged e-bike with apparent modifications to the battery system – a finding that has alarmed authorities.

In response, Energy Safe Victoria CEO Leanne Hughson is reiterating safety warnings issued earlier this year as part of the agency’s “Before you know it” campaign, which highlighted the serious fire risk of unsafe charging practices and DIY modifications of e-transport devices.

“It’s horrifying to think how easily this incident could have ended in tragedy and should be an urgent reminder of the devastating consequences of misusing lithium-ion batteries and chargers,” said Ms Hughson

“People are often trying to save time or money or boost their device’s performance, but these batteries are powerful and volatile when misused. They can overheat, catch fire or explode in seconds - the risks are simply not worth it.”

To stay safe, the public should follow these key safety practices:

  • Always purchase products from reputable suppliers and only use compatible, manufacturer-approved chargers.
  • Never modify battery systems or chargers.
  • Charge devices on non-flammable surfaces and away from bedrooms and exits.
  • Monitor devices while charging and unplug when battery is fully charged.
  • Stop using damaged or overheating batteries immediately.
  • In event of fire, call Triple Zero (000) and evacuate immediately.
